Blu-ray DVDs and players set to dominate region's industry

The take-up rate of next generation DVD players in the region has been rising, with one new format appearing to dominate the scene when it comes to high definition (HD) viewing.

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high definition video, as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.

The other format available is HD-DVD, and only Toshiba is supporting this with its stand alone HD-DVD players.

Formerly people were using VHS. After VHS, they went down to Laser Discs. After Laser Discs, VCDs. At the moment, people are using DVDs. The new trend now is Blu-ray and HD-DVD players.
