Drivers, please take note! Although this is a good initiative, but i don't think 5 secs extra would really be enough for old folks that have problems walking.
Green Man Plus (GMP) is a new initiative by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to address the needs of elderly pedestrians who may require more time to cross the road. Elderly pedestrians can expect to cross with greater ease with longer green man time given to them when they make use of selected signalised pedestrian crossings from 1 October 2009.
LTA had launched the GMP initiative at five locations with nearby health facilities and transport nodes. The five locations are:
Toa Payoh Central and Toa Payoh Lorong 4
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 near Ang Mo Kio MRT station
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 near Yio Chu Kang MRT station
Jalan Bukit Merah near Blk 162
Sinaran Drive near Tan Tock Seng Hospital
At each location, the CEPAS-card readers will be mounted on the traffic light poles and elderly pedestrians can activate the GMP function simply by tapping their new CEPAS-compliant senior citizen concession card on these readers. Once the card reader verifies that it is a valid card, the system will extend the crossing timing up to 5 seconds more at the next cycle. With the extension of the crossing time, elderly pedestrians can have more time to complete the crossing at a more comfortable pace.
