A Car thief was sentenced to 12 months’ jail & fined $800 for stealing a Nissan Sunny from the car rental company.
It would be more comfortable, he thought, to travel in a car than to take public transport - so, he hatched a plan to steal one. Then 19, Chan Chee Wei got an accomplice to rent a Nissan Sunny car on April 2, 2007. He duplicated the key before returning the car the next day. Two weeks later on April 16, Chan went to the multi-storey car park at Bendemeer Road where the car was kept and drove off with it.
The rental company reported the missing car, valued at $27,000, the next day. But Chan managed to forge a false licence plate for the car, which he drove around without any insurance coverage. The stolen car was only recovered on Oct 30 last year, in a car workshop; court documents did not explain how.
Chan, 21, was sentenced to a 12-month jail term by a district court. He was also fined $800 and is banned from holding a driving licence for three years after release from prison.
How this chap got away with the car for 2 years? Driving without extra cost, only need to pump petrol, this is better than OPC cars. I seriously wonder how he got caught.
