On 19 April 2006, 40 crew members took 12 hours to inflate the French-made balloon, which took its first passengers in May 2006. Now, the giant helium DHL Balloon located on Tan Quee Lan Street in the Downtown Core of Singapore will be taking it last flight on 30 Sept 2008. This is due to their lease is expiring in August this year & URA has indicated that the lease will not be extended as it has to make way for the MRT expansion project.
Launched at a cost of S$2.5 million, terminating the joint venture by Aerophile Balloon Singapore Pte Ltd and Vertical Adventure Pte Ltd is going to cost them S$1.2 million in damage. Operated by the Singapore Ducktours, they are considering three alternative sites like Beach Road near Park View Hotel, Clarke Quay near Novotel Clarke Quay Hotel, and Gardens by the Bay at Marina Bay for the relocation, but they might relocate the balloon to Kuala Lumpur or Johor Baru in Malaysia too.
Give it a try before the balloon is gone...
