IRC operator claims SingNet database shared

An operator of a well-known IRC channel has claimed to have access to SingNet's database and is able to match an IP address to a subscriber's user ID. The operator demonstrated this by identifying the chatter even after changing the IP address and rejoined the channel under a different nickname.

The operator claimed to have a working relationship with SingNet and that he was using this privilege to gather statistics for the channel. SingNet has reverted that they respects customer privacy. Users' information are kept confidential and not shared with any third parties.

In network point of view, everything is traceable through network as long as the IP is tied to your modem or network card. A skilled network operator can determine your ID pretty fast. Still remember the case of SingNet giving away the details of 1000 user to Odex, the local animation distributor for legal action?
