Taiwanese gangster chief's funeral attracts underworld figures & politicians

A funeral for a former gangster chief is making headlines in the Taiwanese capital with underworld figures as well as politicians among the many present.

Black limousines and body guards in dark suits and dark glasses formed the backdrop for the high profile funeral of 64 year old Chen Chi-Li. Chen was once the chief of the Bamboo Union, one of the island's most powerful triad societies.

He died of cancer in a Hong Kong hospital, but had stated his wish to be buried in Taiwan. With a host of underworld figures who turned up to pay their last respects, the city's police were on high alert and sent surveillance vehicles to the funeral.

Besides local gang members, many underworld figures from across Asia also turned up at Chen's funeral. Several Taiwanese politicians were also present to pay their last respects, although they were unwilling to face the press.
