Man arrested for making nuisance calls to police emergency line

Police arrested a 43-year-old man on Wednesday for making nuisance calls to the police emergency line "999". Investigations showed that the man had been making obscene calls to "999" since July this year.

He made the latest call at about 2.40am on Wednesday from a public phone at Block 123, Bukit Merah View and was caught by officers patrolling in the area. The man was arrested after the police operator identified his voice.

He will be charged in court on Thursday and if convicted, he faces up to three years' jail or a fine or both.

Police say about 70 percent of "999" calls are nuisance calls. Last year, of the 1,640,640 calls made to "999", 1,135,925 were nuisance calls.

Police also remind the public that the "999" emergency line is meant for people to report cases that need urgent response from the police.

How many time have you called this number? Me? Only once.
