Will raising surcharges solve taxi shortage?

At a forum organised by the Transport Ministry to gather views for its review of Singapore's land transport system, participants have much to say in response to Minister of State for Transport Lim Hwee Hua's suggestion that higher cab fares and surcharges may solve the current headache of not getting a taxi when needed.

Over 50 participants, ranging from commuters and academics to transport operators, joined in the discussion.

According to The Straits Times, some present argued that removing taxi surcharges would solve the problem of cabs hiding during non-peak periods, where there are no surcharges.

The year-long review is expected to produce suggestions to address various issues, such as ways to increase public transport users. The review is expected to end in a few months.
