Ngong Ping 360 shuts after cabin plunge

An empty Hong Kong cable car crashed more than 50 metres to the ground, shaking confidence in one of the city's top tourist attractions, the Ngong Ping 360.

Authorities said they were investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred late Monday, during a test run an hour after the service shut for the night. Television footage showed the empty smashed cable car, lying overturned in shrubs with broken windows after dislodging from its cable on Monday night. No one was injured, although the cabin narrowly missed a nearby road.

The government suspended the cable car service indefinitely. Hong Kong's MTR Corp which owns the service, said it viewed the accident with "grave seriousness". The cable car cost one billion Hong Kong dollars to build and took two years to complete, but has been dogged by problems. Its launch had to be postponed last summer after a breakdown during testing which left 500 visitors stuck in cabins for two hours.
