New Spam Control Act comes into effect on June 15

The Spam Control Act 2007, which aims to address the still-growing problem of spam, will come into effect next week (15 June).

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) says the act will offer a framework to better manage unsolicited commercial electronic messages or spam, sent in bulk. Spam is estimated to make up the bulk of all e-mails sent worldwide.

Under the Act, marketeers, particularly those based in Singapore, who continue to send out spam will face potential financial penalties. The statutory penalty is S$25 for each electronic message, up to a total of S$1 million.

Similar acts have been introduced around the world in countries such as the US and Japan.

How often do you receive local spam? Hardly any, but do receive alot Mobile spam asking to apply for fitness club membership, credit cards & even facial. Wonder if they have bought any lucky draw ticket which i've filled? Haha..

Why isn't Singapore caning spammers? ... Oh, sure, Singapore’s new Spam Control Act carries a big fine. But we're talking about a country in which caning is considered an acceptable form of corporal punishment (remember American teen Michael Fay back in '94?) Why not swat a little spammer backside?
