Solomons Island Quake Trigger Tsunami

A powerful undersea earthquake of 8.0magnitude triggered a tsunami that pounded into the western Solomon Islands early today at 7.40am, destroying entire villages and killed at least 15 people. Witnesses said that the wave was up to 5 metres (16.5 feet) high, swamped towns, flattened homes, and sparked panic among residents of the impoverished South Pacific state.

Residents had been surprised by the giant waves, which hit just minutes after the area was rocked by the initial quake. There wasn't any warning. The only warning they have was the earth tremors. The US Geological Survey reported a series of aftershocks measuring up to a magnitude of 6.7 & the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a regionwide warning immediately after the quake, stretching as far away as Japan.

The Solomon Islands is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates meet and frequently experiences volcanic and seismic activity. Along the plate, where's next?
