Evolution of Cinema Tickets

The history of film spans over a hundred years, from the latter part of the 19th century to the present day and beyond. Motion pictures developed gradually from a carnival novelty to one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment, and mass media in the 20th century. Motion picture films have had a substantial impact on the arts, technology, and politics.

Whereas the first moving picture patrons fled the sight of a flickering black-and-white train approaching them in the Lumiere brother's Paris theater in the late 19th century, early 21st century audiences will soon be lured to theaters with the promise of a new cinema revolution.

As cinema revolution takes place, movie tickets or stubs also went through its own revolution. The earlier ticket stubs don't have the names of most of the movies because back then theaters just printed bulk tickets without much customization. Starting around 80s, the theaters with the more advanced ticketing systems have the name of the theater and later movie title.

Though they do it electronically nowadays, having to be able to go through the evolution together really mean alot. Do you still keep them? While electronically printed tickets do seem to fade over the years, this hand written one don't.

The Desaru Hermit Crab

During our little Desaru trip, 2 Little Hermit Crab was being washed up & by placing empty shells beside them, we are trying to see if we can see the process of shell swapping.



Hermit Crab, a land or water dwelling crustacean. Unlike true crabs, hermit crabs have soft, vulnerable abdomens. For protection from predators, many hermit crabs seek out abandoned shells, usually snail shells. When a hermit crab finds one of the proper size, it pulls itself inside, leaving several legs and its head outside the shell. A hermit crab carries the shell wherever it goes. When it outgrows its shell, it switches to a larger one. Most adult hermit crabs are from 13mm to 121mm long. Living on the seashore, in tidepools, and on the sea bottom in deeper water, hermit crabs scavenge their food.

Featuring the diverse vocal styles of Jazz great Carmen Bradford (USA) as well as guest artists Claressa Monteiro (Jeremy's Sister) and David Gomes (Malaysia), these lush and joyful renditions had us feet tapping and fingers snapping, celebrating a Jazzy Christmas in true swinging style!

Monster Mania Film Festival 2009

The Perspectives Film Festival is an annual event organized by students of the Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. This student-led festival is part of the new curriculum in the school, which aims to expose students to a more practical approach to the syllabus that goes beyond the classroom. Last year was the inaugural year, and it featured some of the first, classic films produced in Singapore, highlighting the glorious past of our local film history,

This year’s theme is more fun as Halloween is just days away, entitled ‘Monster Mania!’, which aims to introduce and reacquaint Singaporean audiences with iconic monsters such as Godzilla (vs King Ghidorah) and the Mighty Peking Man. A highlight of the festival is the specially composed selection of original music for the silent classic film Nosferatu that promises to enhance the aural experience of watching the movie. In addition to the four specially chosen movies (the last one being Little Shop of Horrors, the festival will also feature an opening address by Singaporean film auteur Eric Khoo.

"UP" - The Adventure Animation

Saw “Up” last week and have had to acknowledge that the opening sequence was incredible & brilliant. Its the silent story of Carl and Ellie’s life. But once the balloon house takes off, the plot gets a little too disney. Near the ending sequence, Carl discovering the back pages of the "My Advantage Book" was also touching. Oh by the way, do you think Carl looks like Class 95 DJ FD(Flying Dutchman)?

A young Carl Fredrickson meets a young adventure spirited girl named Ellie. They both dream of going to a Lost Land in South America. 70 years later, Ellie has died. Carl remembers the promise he made to her. Then, when he inadvertently hits a construction worker, he is forced to go to a retirement home. But before they can take him, he and his house fly away. However he has a stowaway aboard. An 8 year old boy named Russell, whose trying to get an assisting the elderly badge. Together, they embark in an adventure, where they encounter talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird named Kevin.

Why Singapore agreed to sell Christmas Island?

At Australia's request, the United Kingdom transferred sovereignty of Christmas Island to Australia in 1957, the Australian government paid the government of Singapore £2.9 million in compensation, a figure based mainly on an estimated value of the phosphate forgone by Singapore. Later, Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands together are called the Australian Indian Ocean Territories.

Christmas Island is of immense scientific value as it was uninhabited until the late nineteenth century, so many unique species of fauna and flora exist which have evolved independently of human interference, but still Singapore give it up. Could it be due to the the annual red crab mass migration that has been going on for centuries?
